Shilpa shastra - Moorthi Puja -Part 2

The images of gods are segmented into Chitrabhasa, Chitra & Chitrardha. Chitrabhasa refers to painting of images on walls or cloth or suitable platforms. Chitra refers to sculpting a full image with all the features including limbs in a round. Chitrardha refers to the image of half –relief or busts (Mukha linga), like the image of Maheshamurthi in Elephanta Caves.

3.Murthi Shilpa – Classification of images

Shaiva - Vaishnava

 Primarily the classification of the images of Hindu gods and goddesses come under Shaiva or Vaishnava sects. All other gods and goddesses like Ganesha, Shakthi (Divine power behind the Trinity), etc can be classified into these categories, as defined in the Purana’s they are in some manner related to Shiva or Vishnu.
